Age UK Launch Trusted Tradesmen Scheme After ‘No Confidence’ Survey

A recent survey has revealed that almost a quarter of over 65s neglect addressing issues with their home, such as plumbing and roofing, as they don’t feel confident enough to find a tradesman or contractor that they can trust – leaving urgent work incomplete that could be affecting the safety of their home or even their health.

The survey was carried out by TrustMark, which is the government-endorsed scheme to identify and help homeowners find trustworthy and reputable tradesmen in a variety of trades – from building and plumbing to electrical work and roofing. The results revealed that 23% of people aged 65 or over ignore work on their home through fear of not finding a reputable tradesman, while an astonishing 98% don’t base their selection on qualifications or skills.

As a result, TrustMark have teamed up with Age UK, who are a leading charity supporting elderly people in the UK, to provide easy and instant access to a list of local trusted tradesmen in their area – with our team here at Roofline Residential on the list for customers based in or near Leeds.

You can take a look at the Age UK TrustMark search tool here – and it couldn’t be easier to use. Simply pop in your postcode and select a trade, such as ‘Roofers’, and a list of firms is displayed underneath – complete with name, distance from your postcode and their contact information, as well as those all-important accreditations.

The TrustMark search tool on the Age UK site simply requires a postcode and desired trade before displaying a full list of trusted results.

Liz Male, Chairman of TrustMark said that, while most people over 65 clearly feel confident to find the right trusted tradesman to work on their home, it’s a ‘national embarrassment’ that any older person is put in this sort of position.

She said: “[If] we know of a relative, friend or neighbour who does not have a network of reputable local tradespeople they can call upon […] we have a responsibility to signpost them to an independent and safe source of advice and assistance.”

If your home needs roofing work done, you need to make sure whoever you choose if trained and accredited by at least one national body; here at Roofline Residential, we’re TrustMark approved and registered through the Fairtrades scheme so you can have complete piece of mind that any work we carry out will be to a high standard, on time and within an agreed budget.
